Ultimate Guide to Increasing Power Ouput!

All athletes want to stand out.

In my experience, the athletes who move the fastest stand out.

Not even the biggest or strongest. It is the ones that translate their strength into speed, who get the spotlight.

Want to know how to do this?

It is called the force-velocity curve.

The formula for power is force x velocity.

Optimal power output is perfectly in the middle of the two (force and velocity).

Now, what if a person has tons of force, no velocity? Well then more strength work doesn't help and could actually take away from velocity, making them less powerful.

If someone has more velocity than force, more speed will take away from strength.

So as a coach, I must see where an athlete sits on the force velo curve.

If someone is very strong, they must incorporate more speed. If someone is fast, they must incorporate for strength.

You can definitely have “enough” of either. There sufficient amount of strength and speed for optimal power. Too much strength or speed can create diminishing returns regarding power output.

Re-read that because I wish I knew that when I was in college.

HIP EXTENSION IS KEY

To jump high, accelerate well and run fast at top speed you must extend the hip quickly.
.
.
This demands high rate coding from the posterior chain. I ensure this outcome by prescribing movements such as a Jammer Hip Extension.
